A Quick Campaign Stop in Hawaii
People always ask what I like most and least about campaigning for my dad. By far my least favorite aspect is personal attacks from the media. What counterbalances this facet of campaigning, however, is what I see in every state that I have campaigned in on behalf of my dad (so far I have counted about 23 different states).
I see people at the grassroots level who don’t stand a lot to gain personally from a campaign out there devoting a ton of their time and even financial resources to support candidates they like. While each individual does not necessarily make or break the campaign, collectively their support means everything and defines what this country’s democracy is all about. To me it is very inspiring and humbling to see their support.
Last week, I had the opportunity to campaign somewhere I had never had a chance to campaign before: Hawaii. I know, it is not exactly a tough assignment in the winter (I just wish I could have spent longer than a weekend). Josh reminded me that while he was campaigning last weekend in freezing temperatures in Iowa, I was swimming in the ocean between speeches in Oahu. I met some incredible people here who are working very hard to get my dad elected. They were so enthusiastic about the campaign that it really energized me to do more.
Above is a shot of me and my wife, Laurie, with former State Senator Fred Hemmings and former Congresswoman Pat Saiki.
